Lesson 1: PRONOUNS

Before we start, let's watch this video together! :) 

Pronouns refer to and replace nouns (the names of people, places, and things) that have already been mentioned, or that the speaker/writer assumes are understood by the listener/reader. For example, “I want you to read this again.” The words I, you, and this are pronouns. In this sample sentence, it isn’t necessary to actually see the nouns (writer, reader, and sentence) because the writer’s/speaker’s meaning is obvious.

PRACTICE 1(i): PRONOUNS

Fill in the blank with a suitable personal pronoun.


          Muthu, Ali and I were walking past a void deck. Suddenly, __________ heard a loud shout.

__________seemed to be coming from the lift lobby. We looked at one another in surprise.


          Muthu, Ali and I heard another loud sound and we run forward. An old man was lying on the

floor. __________ was clutching his chest and gasping slightly. Kneeling beside him, Ali asked, "Sir,

are you all right?" "__________ think I'm having a heart attack," the man said weakly.


          Hurriedly, __________ took my phone out of my pocket and called for the ambulance. The

minutes dragged by. We stayed with __________ until the nurses arrived. We were relieved to see

 __________. They checked his pulse and shone a light into his eyes. Then, the men was taken into

the ambulance, as he passed by, __________ lifted a hand weakly to show that he appreciated our

help.


          Soon, the ambulance was ready to leave for the hospital. __________ pulled out of the car

park and raced to the hospital. Looking at the ambulance, Muthu speaked softly, "I hope he gets to

the hospital on time."
